Hoarder Followup

Image

Though I find myself hanging in there with the housework, even though I have loads of writing and editing to do everyday, I’d rather get my readers interested in how my writing life is going–what I’m learning–than talking about household organization, no matter how important that is.

So, here goes my umteenth incarnation as a blogger:

Right now, I’m hoping I hear something from the agents and editors I pitched to at RWA Nationals, that is, before I self-publish the two novels in my Ages of Invention Series.

Have all the covers for the two novels ready to go. I just need to start handing out advanced reader copies for review.

And I’m anxious to finish my WIP space opera, to get to working on a young adult science fiction novella.

I’ve never enjoyed history more than that in the novels of my critique partners, and because of my background in science, I’d like to learn as much as I can about the way people thought about science throughout history. That’s what led to the writing of my historical science fictions.

The Union of Opposites website (theunionofopposites.com) explores different kinds of consciousness that I use in my stories. The site is philosophical and built on my published experiments, but it helps me create a new world of thought for my future novels.

That’s all for now. I’ll keep  you posted.

Thanks for looking in,

S.B.K. Burns (Susan)

I DON’T WANT TO BE A HOARDER

Maybe most of you know what the house of a hoarder looks like. My mom, who worked outside the house, still had time to dust and organize our home. So it wasn’t until years later when I saw a TV show about this problem that I realized what I’d be facing as a stay-at-home mom.

To me, a hoarder’s house is one that not only has all surfaces covered in a random assortment of items, but also items separated by layers of dust. It’s the kind of place I joked to my junior high science students about. I used their bedrooms, thus outfitted, as an example of digging down into layers of earth in order to reveal geologic time. One digs through layers of dust to find fossilized things from the past.

Not being a very organized caretaker of wifely duties at the home front, while son and hubby went out and did REAL WORK (of course I’m kidding–writing is the only real work!), I had to find a way of arranging my day so as to save time to write.

I want to change this blog into one in which other authors, if they want to, can chime in with the tricks they’ve learned to avoid the hoarder syndrome, opening up time enough for writing their next great novel.

1. PAPER PLATES AND PLASTIC SILVERWARE

If you can afford it on your budget, invest in buying tons of paper and plastic at a discount from Cosco. I keep my plastic silverware in Snapware dispensers (see below). And, of course, I always RECYCLE.

NaNoWriMo: Why I’m Cheering from the Sidelines

So well written, I can’t add anything.
Thank you Kristin for telling it like it is.

We’re halfway through the first week of November, which means thousands of writers around the globe are deeply settled into their NaNoWriMo writing routine. If you look to the right of our blog, you’ll see we have a fantastic widget tracking all of our chapter members’ progress toward their goals. (Go team!) Last week, Cindy provided us with some incredible advice on how to make the most of your NaNoWriMo experience. But she also mentioned that the experience isn’t for everyone; that some writers just don’t enjoy it.

I’m one of those writers.

I’m speaking from experience, of course. Back in 2013, I attempted my first NaNoWriMo. I was armed with an outline, some character sketches, and a 500 word snippet for an opening scene that I’d written in a weekly assignment for a writing class, which my teacher encouraged me to use as part of a larger work. I’d…
